1. Please note that I do not have a therapy room that I work from, so if weather is inclement we may need to reschedule. I may be able to get a room at East Maitland Library, or depending on your circumstances, I could meet you in your home, but if you are more than 40 minutes outside the Maitland LGA, a travel fee of $50 will apply. For at home visits, the children can not be present, and the house can not currently be under renovation.
2. Please take note of what the weather is like before you arrive to our appointment and dress to the conditions - please wear covered shoes and a hat. You may also like to consider bringing sunscreen, water and mozzie repellant. A pen and notebook will be useful as well. You will also both need to bring your own camp chair to sit on.
3. Be mindful that we are out in public, and as such I can't guarantee your complete privacy as other people may walk close to us, or someone you know could enter the space. I will follow your lead as to whether we stop speaking when other people get near etc.
4. Please be sure to specify exactly where you want us to meet from the options on the locations page, if you've not already done so.
5. Re-scheduling sessions: Our work together is important and I understand that on occasion pressing matters come up, however therapy is a commitment to yourself, your partner, your relationship and your growth. Please only re-schedule if it is absolutely unavoidable.
6. I will not attend an appointment time, if payment has not been made prior.
7. It is quite possible we may see each other out in the community between sessions - we may even attend the same social events. I am more than happy to say hello and have a casual, brief chat, but due to protecting your privacy being my priority, you will need to approach me, I won't approach you. There's every chance I might be with my partner, a friend or a family member, and you'll need to take that into consideration - they may ask me who you are. But please don't ever think I'm ignoring you - I am just meeting my obligations to maintain your privacy.
8. Please ensure that your children are cared for by someone else, they can not be present for our work.
9. Allow up to 90 minutes for our couples sessions.
10. Some sessions you'll both walk away feeling connected and confident that you can make this relationship work. Other sessions you may leave ready to throw in the towel and feeling quite hopeless. This is *really* normal. It is an up and down journey, where you take steps forward and back. Please, unless you just don't like me, (and that is possible) hang in there. If you are still both wanting to make this work - give it a chance.
11. Cancellation: If you cancel more than 24 hours prior to your appointment, you can reschedule or receive a full refund. Within 24 hours of appointment or if you are a no-show, no refunds given.
12. Please treat each other respectfully during our sessions and come prepared to listen to, and learn about your partner.
13. No vaping or smoking permitted during our sessions.
14. Please bring a chair for each of you.
15. Please be sure to complete your Gottman questionnaire at least 5 days prior to your individual sessions with me. They take some time on my end to go through, if I get your results the day of your appointment, I won't have a chance to go through it. The cost for this is around AU$60-70. You'll be sent invitations to purchase and complete this, once I have both of your emails.
16. In session three, you'll each be handed a folder. There are a lot of handouts and workbooks, and we'll be dipping in and out of all of them at various times, so it's important to have them on hand for each session, please keep them together in your folder and bring the folder for each appointment.
I have compiled some of the more commonly used concepts and terms with links (click on the images) to further information for you to learn more, to help you get the most out of the therapeutic experience.
A couple can overcome many arguments or hurtful situations, if effective 'repairs' are made.
When one partner attempts to de-escalate the situation, to avoid the conflict becoming our of control, how the other responds will determine if the repair has been effective or not.
Going our for breakfast together every Saturday. Having the family over for lunch on a Sunday. Taking 30 minutes every day to focus on one another. Friday night date night. Attending worship together. Meditating together. Sharing similar values. Viewing your relationship in the same way. All of these things contribute to a shared sense of 'meaning' in your relationship.
An important part of the Sound Relationship House (SRH). Essentially, this just means how well you know your partner - TODAY - not just their history, not who they were or what they liked 5 years ago - but who are they TODAY. What's their favourite song? Who is their best friend? Where do they want to retire? These things can change over time - It's important to stay up to date with each other
Meta-emotion is basically how you feel about feelings. More specifically, it is how you deal with emotions that might be considered difficult, like sadness, disappointment, rejection, or loss. There are two meta-emotion styles:
