To everyone else, you look like you're managing fine.
You’ve adapted, pushed through impossible odds and built a life that functions- even when it hasn’t felt easy. From the outside, things might look OK. Inside, however, is a different story.
Your mind is constantly “on”.
Your body feels full of tension.
You wake at 4.30am and struggle to get back to sleep.
Conversations long finished play over and over again in your mind.
The coping tools you developed in the middle of a chaotic or distressing childhood just aren’t working for you anymore.
I’m Mel Eden, a Hunter Valley counsellor offering walk and talk therapy for women in Maitland, Newcastle and surrounding areas.
I provide structured trauma support for women who didn’t get to have the childhood their friends had. Women who experienced abuse, abandonment, chaos or neglect- and the shame that often followed.
The pain we carry from those early years doesn't simply fade with time. It shapes how you parent, how you partner, how you work, and how you view yourself and the world around you.
There are no quick fixes for pain that has lived in your body for decades.
But there can be steadier ground.
Tools that actually support you now.
Pockets of relief.
And space.
Space to feel heard.
Space for the younger parts of you to be acknowledged without judgement.
Space to understand what your nervous system has been responding to all these years.
If you grew up managing other people’s emotions to avoid the fallout…
Learned to read the room before your own feelings…
Became overly competent far too early…
Always had to be the responsible one…
Bit your tongue and hid what you really felt…
Learned that your needs were inconvenient, excessive, or unsafe…
And you’re ready to explore what’s kept your heart beating all these years - without abandoning yourself again.
You’re in the right place.
Mel Eden
How I work
This is slow, intentional work. Because it takes time and care to make lasting change in our lives.
The first one or two sessions focus on slowing things down and getting a clearer sense of who you are, what has shaped you, and where life feels most constricted right now.
We take time to explore your story, your relationships, how your nervous system responds under pressure, what matters to you, and what you’re hoping for from therapy. This allows the work that follows to feel grounded, purposeful, and responsive, instead of rushed or reactive.
Counselling for women is offered in person in Maitland, Newcastle or Whitebridge. Or via Zoom. It's up to you.
It can feel a bit vulnerable, the idea of sitting in a park to talk about what’s heavy on your heart. It’s a different rhythm than a sterile office. But for the women I work with, that’s exactly why it works. They often find it’s just... easier to breathe out there.
"But will people see us?" We don't sit in the middle of busy walking paths. I’ve scouted spots nestled among the trees where we have our own pocket of space. It’s not a soundproof room, but many women actually find the open air feels safer and less "trapped" than four walls. If a wayward wanderer ambles too close, we simply pause. I handle your privacy with a lot of care.
"Do I have to be fit?" Not at all. We usually stay seated for our first 2 or 3 sessions while we get to know each other. After that, if you want to walk, we walk. It’s a gentle, slow stroll, never a power walk. And if you’d rather stay seated for all of your sessions, that’s perfectly okay, too.
"What if I don't like the spot?"You are always in charge. If the sun is too bright or the spot doesn't feel right, we move. You never have to say or do anything that doesn't feel okay for you. We go at your pace.
You don't have to be 100% ready. Start where you are today, and see how it feels. If you want to continue, great! If you don't, that's perfectly ok too.
We meet in green spaces in Maitland or Newcastle or on the beach. It's up to you. Nature therapy offers a unique space where healing can unfold in ways that a traditional office will rarely match.
Whether you're always on the go, travelling, or simply feel best in your own space, online sessions make it easy to get the support you need—Australia wide.
I focus on working with female same-sex couples who are not in crisis.
These sessions are called 'alignment sessions' and they are set up to help you improve your communication and deepen your connection with and understanding of your partner.
They are less spring clean, and more of a 'quick dust' for women generally doing ok, and wanting to keep it that way.
If you'd like to stay in contact and hear more about the outdoor therapy I offer in Newcastle and Maitland and other therapist musings, I'd be honoured if you'd sign up for my Midlife Musings email list. It's a gentle space that I use to reflect and share resources, and you would be MOST welcome!
No Spam. I don't send emails out more than once a week (unless I am promoting one of my Mindfulness in Nature groups, Women's Groups or book clubs).
